Treadmill Exercise Is Great For Heart and Weight Loss

By Kevin Urban

Walking is great exercise. Study after study has proven that people who walk regularly, whether through treadmill exercise or outdoors, will enjoy the benefits of better health far into old age. There are many reasons people give why they don’t workout or exercise more. Some people aren’t sure how to exercise and they are uncomfortable going to a fitness center to work with a trainer. But with a good treadmill and a workout routine that fits your needs, exercise can be enjoyable, convenient and beneficial.

Treadmill workouts are simply controlled walking exercises. Treadmills give you a cardio exercise that strengthens the heart and improves cardiovascular fitness. Regular exercise and workouts such as walking on a treadmill improves circulation and reduces blood pressure. Exercising on a treadmill may not give you longer life. What it will do is allow you to enjoy better health and help you take advantage of any genetic traits for longer life that you may have.

Walking or working out on a treadmill as an exercise is also great for burning calories, losing weight and improving overall fitness. Getting a workout by walking at a brisk pace, whether on the street, in a mall corridor or by exercising on a treadmill burns 100 calories per mile. People walking at the rate of four miles per hour can expect to burn 400 calories during that hour. Jogging is simply a faster form of running. The rate of calorie burn is about the same. Trotting along at the rate of six miles per hour on a treadmill will burn off 600 calories during an hours' exercise.

The benefits of treadmills over other forms of walking or running is that it is controlled. If you walk or jog along the street, you may go at a slower pace on an ‘off’ day. With a treadmill, it is easy to control your speed as well as monitor time and distance during your workout. Many of the better treadmills will also tell you how many calories you are burning during treadmill walking workouts. These treadmills will also monitor your heart rate for you. These control features give you the opportunity to gain the maximum benefit from your exercise session. Without a treadmill, you are basically guessing and hoping that you are getting the desired exercise from each treadmill session.

Getting fit on a treadmill is an easy workout routine to acquire. People with a treadmill in the family room, exercise room or garage can easily get into a routine of walking or running on the treadmill for half an hour or more in the morning before work, or in the evening before retiring to bed. People who decide walking or jogging on a treadmill is boring can easily set up a TV to watch while they exercise. Other people read a book or listen to music while doing their low impact treadmill workouts. People who are serious about starting an exercise program for better health should start with a regular treadmill fitness program.
